In Lake Berryessa, the United States, is located the largest outlet in the world: a real gap that makes the body of water in California a attraction unique in the world. It is a kind of ravine that gives the impression to swallow everything around him.
It is not a natural phenomenon,
but the result of a engineering work: the huge crater is nothing more
than a spillway, a trick that has been adopted to prevent the
surrounding area to go under water. A dam whose story, for another, it
is quite old, since it was built between 1953 and 1957,
In the fifties, then, in California – and more precisely in the county of Napa
– the Monticello Dam created Lake Berryessa, one of the largest
man-made bodies of water of the state. The lake in the past was involved
in floods with disastrous consequences, flooding a valley and a whole
town.
Here, then, that it was decided to
design the dam, thanks to which it can be handled more than 360 thousand
liters of water per second. The hole that follows
originates in the moment in which the level of the lake exceeds 15
meters and a half above the level of the funnel. The image is very
similar to that of a bath of enormous size to which the cap has been
removed.
A veritable whirlwind that seems to
swallow everything and that is none other than a tank that can provide
hydroelectric power and water to the entire region of North Bay.
The huge hole of the lake, called The Glory Hole,
is 22 meters wide and is located about 200 meters away from the dam; it
must be said, however, that can be very dangerous and not
coincidentally is considered off limits for both boats for swimmers.
