President of the union, Ajik Magaji, who
said this on Wednesday, added that the strikes make students take to
crime and social vices, thereby endangering the future of the nation.
He said: “As the adage says, ‘an idle man
is the devil’s workshop’, so is an idle student. The present security
challenges facing the country will be worse if students continue to stay
at home.
The SUG president said that students had
become ready tools in the hands of ‘evil men’ who do not wish the nation
well, because of the continuous closures of the schools.
He said many students had died because of
`aimless journeys’ from one part of the country to another in absence of
their class works.
“There are also increases in the cases on
early pregnancies among female students because they are not
meaningfully engaged,” he added.
The student leader said he wondered why the federal government had reneged on the agreement it entered with ASUU since 2009.
“The federal government and ASUU should look for a way of resolving
the issues, so that students will return to classes and acquire the
education they need to contribute for the development of the nation,” he
said.
