The number of persons that died in the fire sparked off at a scene
of the weekend accident in Lapai area of Niger state has risen to 30 as
more of the victims rushed to hospitals have given up within the past
four days.
Niger state Special Adviser on Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji
Mohammed Shaba, disclosed this yesterday while speaking with journalists
in Minna.
He said: “On the date of accident, eight persons died on the spot. We later learnt that 12 villagers were also killed by the inferno and were buried by the villagers, while five burnt corpses of the villagers were discovered after the tanker was lifted by a heavy crane deployed to clear the road, increasing the tally to 25 deaths.
However, the latest information reaching us shows that five other injured persons have died from severe burns at General Hospital Minna, Federal Medical Centre, Bida, and Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital, Zaria, raising the death toll to 30 as at today.”
“I will advise people to stop the habit of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, owing to the dangerous nature of such illegal act. Times without number, many Nigerians have lost their lives in such incidents across the country.”
Shaba appealed to the federal government to commence the rehabilitation of Abuja-Lambatta-Lapai-Bida-Mokwa road which, he said, “constitutes a death trap to commuters.”
